SOARING chlamydia rates among Generation Y Queenslanders could lead to an increase in HIV diagnoses.

Queensland Health figures show the number of chlamydia cases has increased by more than 16% in 12 months.

There were 19,048 cases statewide last year compared to16,379 in 2009.

People aged between 20 and 29 are at highest risk.

Dr Kuong Taing, the clinical director of Sunshine Coast Sexual Health, said patients with chlamydia were four to six times more likely to contract HIV if exposed.

aWith World AIDS Awareness Day on December 1 the message we would like to get across is that sexually transmitted diseases are still out there and HIV is one of the serious ones,a Dr Taing said.

aThe concern is that if we see a condition like chlamydia on the rise, that indicates that there's a lot of unsafe sexual practices occurring.

aYou can have fun but be careful and practise safer sex, especially with a casual partner.

aThat means using a condom and correct lubricants. …
