HAVING watched this project take shape for a number of years I knew it would be something special. Yet seeing the completed home was still an eye-opener.

A lot of thought went into the planning of the single-level home which sits beautifully on a wide-fronted block that is handy to the shops and beach.

The result is quite magnificent. Contemporary in design and so functional.

A highlight is the open living areas and that the bedrooms are along one side of a light and airy hallway. In this way it creates good cross-flow of breezes as this part of the house is virtually just one room wide.

The hallway has study desks and storage under the windows which run right along one wall.

From the street, the home defines style with its modern square fascia matched with horizontal timber cladding and square timber posts embedded in the garden. A distressed timber entrance way leading to a stained timber and glass pivot door creates a seamless transition into the home.

The expansiveness of the casual living zone is the first indication of the home's unique appeal. Complemented by polished concrete floors, raised square-set ceilings and ample use of glass, the home is designed to capture light and breezes and enhance the alfresco lifestyle.

The spacious living areas feature a 4m-long island kitchen bench with free-form concrete top which is cantilevered about 1m at one end. Twin stainless steel industrial style basins are set into it. There are soft-close drawers, a wide waist-height Fisher & Paykel dishwasher, windows the entire length of the preparation bench, a 900mm-wide Smeg oven and four-hob gas cooktop plus wok burner. An icemaker fridge is fitted.

Ducted air-conditioning is throughout the home, though the builder incorporated high glass doors and large glass panes along with louvre windows to ensure natural cooling can be used to great effect. …
