THE political force that is Bob Katter blew into Gympie yesterday for talks with potential candidates for his new Australian Party, discussions on the creation of a party branch here and a policy announcement aimed squarely at the region's decimated dairy industry.

A confident Bob Katter was drawing plenty of admirers in Mary St, lambasting the LNP for its abject failure to protect Queensland farmers and proclaiming that his party already had the support to rival One Nation's 1998 election result at the next state election.

While Mr Katter was tight-lipped on who the candidate here might be, he said an announcement would be made in about two weeks and that whoever it was would enjoy an easy victory.

At least two recent polls back up his confidence, with Labor polling showing Katter's Australian Party has 22% of the vote in the seat of Mulgrave, compared to 32% for the ALP incumbent and 36% for the LNP. …
