JOHN CARVER feels that his illustrious association with Newcastle United may not have been possible had it not been for his time spent with Montagu & North Fenham FC as a young coach.

The Geordie has underlined that clubs like Monty are not just a chance for young players - but also young coaches.

As a 20-year-old, Carver's first love for coaching came with Monty as he learned the ropes of a career that would see him go on to work with global world stars such as Kevin Keegan, Ruud Gullit and Sir Bobby Robson.

Carver, of course, is back at Newcastle as No 2 to Alan Pardew these days, and his return has coincided with the Magpies reaching the heights of the top four of the Premier League.

Carver has seen it all at St James' Park from relegation scraps to Champions League nights and FA Cup finals.

But he believes that Monty helped him on the road to the top.

Carver said: "I finished playing at 20 and got into coaching when I was young.
