HOW many pensioners do you know who have saved a spare $8000?

I can't think of any. Most pensioners I know and have met recently are struggling to pay for electricity bills (increased 40% in four years), insurance, fuel and rates. Not to mention the seasonal costs which come with Christmas gift buying.

Legally blind, Rosedale resident Elizabeth Redfern, who suffers from cataracts in both eyes, needs to find $8000 if she wants any hope in the near future of her sight being restored.

Elizabeth has been on the Queensland public health waiting list to see an eye specialist in Brisbane for almost seven years, but has received the typical bureaucratic fob-off.

And she is not alone. Thousands of Queensland pensioners are faced with the same problem (i.e. find between four and eight thousand dollars, or go blind on the Labor government's public waiting list).

Meanwhile, a quick glance at this morning's papers will tell you that because of an expected increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving by boat, processing costs alone will increase by $1. …
