THE introduction of a charge for clear plastic sacks for recycling plastic and cardboard in a Teesside borough has come under fire.

And one resident says he will stop recycling rather than pay for the plastic bags.

Redcar and Cleveland Council intends introducing from the new year a pounds 2 charge for 50 plastic sacks for recycling plastics and cardboard.

But council, leader Councillor George Dunning has blamed Government-imposed spending cuts for the introduction of the charge.

At a meeting of Redcar and Cleveland Council, Councillor Steve Kay, pictured inset, said: "Is it not unjust to charge the residents for the tools to do the job of recycling? How long will it be before the council charges residents for their wheelie bins?" Lingdale resident Alan Groves, 59, an ambulanceman, said: "It is not a question of the money - it is the principle.

"We are being charged for bags to recycle to help the environment and the council. …
