Fellows Ready to Shine in National Challenge; Brisbane Grade Duty Boost for Qld All-Rounder

AS he prepares to represent Queensland under-17s at the national championships, Sam Fellows is confident in the knowledge his game is up to the challenge.

Fellows will be joined by Laidley wrist spinner Jack Wood in the Queensland team. The side this week played two warm-up games against a Queensland Country under-19 outfit, featuring Ipswich's Luke Barrett.

Fellows made 16 not out and took 1-8 in the Tweny20 game, then hit 44 not out and took 2-43 in the two-day game.

The former Central Districts cricketer has joined Wests in Brisbane this summer, becoming a regular fixture in the club's second grade side.

The spin bowling all-rounder took a four-wicket haul against University of Queensland recently as well as two-for against Valleys and 13 not out in his only bat.

It has been a big step up from Ipswich cricket but Fellows is coming to terms with the demands.

C[pounds sterling]It's a very different style of cricket,C[yen] the Raceview 16-year-old said. C[pounds sterling]In Ipswich it is more attacking. In Brisbane it is a waiting game.

C[pounds sterling]You have to stay out there all day if you want to get runs.

C[pounds sterling]You can be out there having to face six foot six blokes bowling 135kmh at you.

C[pounds sterling]It's a lot of hard work. You've just got to get through it.C[yen]

And that's just the batting.

C[pounds sterling]In Ipswich if you bowl a good ball, you don't get hit around,C[yen] Fellows said.

C[pounds sterling]In Brisbane I'll bowl what I think is a good ball and still get hit for a single.

C[pounds sterling]Batters have a very good knowledge of what they can do and they're always looking for runs. …
