Yeppoon Torn over Ways to Fix Shopping Car Park Anger

COURTNEY Salsa knows one of the few.

While hundreds of car owners are fined each month for parking offences in Rockhampton, only a handful have received a ticket in Yeppoon. And one of them works with Courtney at Rip Curl in Normanby St.

The lack of tickets doesn't mean there are no parking problems though. Visitors often complain that they can't find anywhere to leave their cars at busy periods.

The council has just carried out a survey of business owners in the CBD to find out how it can improve things for tourists and shoppers. But the businesses are divided over what needs to be done.

Courtney said the council had put in new restrictions in one of the back streets where staff park and one of her colleagues got a ticket last Friday.

aWe need more parking,a she said. aIt's not easy to find a place to park.a

She said she would like restrictions in some areas but thinks the back streets should be unrestricted.

But Cr Bill Ludwig is convinced that parking in Yeppoon will continue to be chaotic until the town gets its long-promised multi-storey solution.

aThere are times when the place is bursting at the seams and the only solution is a multi-storey car park,a Cr Ludwig said.

The survey showed a very mixed response from businesses. Some wanted to see strict enforcement of the restrictions on the time cars can be left in the bays, while others said people should be free to park without the threat of a fine, to encourage more business. …
