CHELSEA stand accused of living up to their nickname the Pensioners.

An ageing squad has seen the two Manchester clubs fly off into the distance and it is all down, many say, to the spine of their team.

Chelsea built league title success upon the commanding John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, but time, like the tide, waits for no man and now there is no pace with the power.

Fernando Torres, signed for a ludicrous pounds 50m, alluded to the advanced age of his team-mates in a moment of soul-cleansing that no doubt he regrets being made public given his own total lack of goals and impact.

Age a problem? Not often, is it, that the manager of a top club is younger than some of his players, but that's the case with Andre Villas-Boas!

A most welcome 3-0 victory over toothless Wolves halted an alarming run of Premier League results for Chelsea that mirrored three defeats in their last four matches.

However, it was but a temporary reprieve with the Pensioners losing at home once again in a midweek Carling Cup tie that completed another set of awful figures - they have now suffered five defeats in their last nine starts in various competitions.

Certainly a game Newcastle might once have feared now appears more than winnable, though to write off Chelsea would be a danger.

They still possess players of genuine quality, are better than most in the division, and are no doubt smarting at what they will perceive as unfair criticism from those who are no fans of Roman Abramovich's way of buying silverware.

Newcastle, on the other hand, don't splash the cash. They instead count the pennies and demand miracles from Alan Pardew and his players.

The fact that Mike Ashley is delivered those miracles is startling in truth, but a close-knit bunch of footballers have earned their stripes and their accolades. …
