DECEMBER'S Bookclub Book of the Month is: A TIGER TOO MANY by Antony Wootten (Eskdale, pounds 4.99), available from Guisborough Bookshop, Whitby Bookshop, Amazon and www.eskdale.150m.com AIMED at children aged nine to 12, A Tiger Too Many is based on some events in London Zoo during the Second World War.

It features a young girl called Jill desperate to save a sickly tiger, not from bomb attacks, but from being KBO by the zoo, which means "killed by order", the process by which unhealthy animals are put down.

Jill has an older brother, Pete, who works in London Zoo's Lion House. She spends much of her spare time there helping out with the animals.

When war is declared, Jill is horrified to find out that a number of poisonous snakes are to be killed, to prevent them escaping in the event of a bomb attack.

But there is worse to come. Because of food and medication shortages, there are plans to kill other animals too, one of them being Jill's favourite, an old tiger called Ronny. …
