JOINING the Brownies isn't just about having fun and making new friends.

It helps youngsters to develop their confidence and social skills and make useful contributions to their community.

The 49th Middlesbrough (Stainsby) Brownie pack meets at Acklam Grange School on Wednesday nights.

Catering for seven to ten-year-old girls, it was started by current Brown Owl Valerie Milsom back in the 1970s.

She explained: "I started this particular Brownie pack in September 1974.

"It is called the 49th Middlesbrough (Stainsby) because it was Stainsby School when the Brownies started there."

At the time, said Valerie, there were lots of young girls eager to join.

"There was a waiting list of 90 children to join in those days, so we started a second pack.

"I have been going there every Wednesday ever since!

"We have had girls through, they have grown up and we have since had their daughters through.

"Most of the girls come from Acklam. At the moment we have girls from seven different schools.

"The girls enjoy it and I like to think we are helping them in some way.

"They have fun but they are also learning social skills and all sorts of other things.

"It is very rewarding. You can see them learning to get on with each other."

One recent project involved a badge called "Friend to Animals".

"That teaches them about endangered animals and looking after pets," said Valerie.

At the moment they are spending time making Christmas cards and gifts.

"We are going carol singing at Acklam Court sheltered accommodation."

As well as all their normal activities, there are also annual trips to the Egton Guide House on the North Yorkshire Moors.

Valerie said: "When we take them away, they help with all the cooking and the cleaning and waiting at tables. …
