Nicole's a Teenage Athletics Sensation

ATHLETICS: Organisers of the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships would do well to revisit the rule books after the all-conquering performance of Sunshine Coast speedster Nicole Kay.

Thirteen-year-old Kay scored emphatic victories in the under-14 100m and 200m finals at the University of Queensland on the weekend although her haul could have been greater had she been allowed to take on a bigger work load.

Kay, from Buderim, qualified for the 400m after winning the Queensland schools crown earlier in the year but Athletics Australia rules restrict young athletes to two races at the national championships.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Chancellor State College student's performance was the fact she only dabbles in track running at school level and as a part of her beach running program with Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club.

Her Mooloolaba coach Peter Roodveldt was in little doubt as to how she would have fared had she been able to take the line in the 400m. …
