ATLANTIC BEACH | David Thompson, a fixture in Beaches government for about three decades, is seeking a job in Tennessee.

And while he says he wants to get back into law enforcement, Thompson acknowledged that government work in Atlantic Beach has become "stressful."

Thompson was Atlantic Beach police chief for 23 years prior to his current job as the assistant city manager. Friday he confirmed he is one of four finalists for police chief in Springfield, Tenn. He said there should be a decision by the end of this year.

Thompson said he applied for that job because he wants to return to law enforcement. But he admitted that the criticism he and other City Hall administrators have taken from City Commissioner Carolyn Woods over the past few years has taken its toll.

"It makes it more stressful," Thompson said. "I think any time there are public criticisms or statements, especially allegations or suggestions of a criminal nature, that creates a negative public perception. a Does it have an impact? Of course it does."

In February 2010, Woods asked the State Attorney's Office to investigate top managers and some of her fellow commissioners, though she never provided a specific allegation. She said in a letter to prosecutors that her concerns were related to a sewage pipeline project that was approved by the commission, but gave no other details. Woods has also been a consistent critic of the assistant city manager's post, often questioning the necessity of the job.

Assistant State Attorney Richard Komando said he and his investigators found no reason to open a formal investigation.

Thompson has sought employment elsewhere before. In 2007 he was a finalist for a police chief's position in Ashland, Ky., but withdrew before the final decision.

Woods said she doesn't understand why Thompson is concerned with her criticism. …
