GREETINGS readers of the mighty, revamped, re-freshed Daily Mercury!

Soon to be known, no doubt, as aThe Daily Miners Maila if the current resource fuelled boom continues in the north of our sunny state.

Who am I? Why, only your humble co-respondent Mike the Miner, of course.

Appearing weekly in the mighty Mercury, courtesy of a mine (probably) near you. It was always pre-destined that I would probably join the Fourth Estate on account of my attainment of a lofty fourth grade aedujcationa having repeated Year 2 twice in me younger years.

I confess that when the best mate came into the bar of the Austral Hotel recently, slurped down a couple of beers, then loudly pronounced to all and sundry present: aThey're lookin' fer a miner ter do some work at the Daily Mercury,a I was somewhat sceptical.

aOh really?a I says back to him. It got me to thinkin. Maybe its true, miners ARE certainly in demand everywhere it seems these days.

And nothing surprises me given what I've seen over the last 30 years I've spent in the mining game. I'm not generally one to boast or skite. Indeed I hate a man who blows his own trumpet, but it must be fairly said, when it comes to mining and all things related, I'm sort of an all-round expert on everything a a doctor of the dirt, a genius and a guru too.

Open-cut, underground, overground, round and round and up and down. Been there, done that, got the T shirt and seen it all.

Just yesterdy I happened to be walking past the neighbour's place and I saw a few little children playing happily in their sandpit in the backyard there with their tiny little trucks and shovels and things.

I leaned me head over the back fence and yelled at the kids: aHey, hey, what the hell do you think yer doin there?a

aSlow down when yer loading that little Tonka truck with sand spilling everywhere. …
