TOURIST information centre volunteers are hoping to gain support to keep their community service going.

Great Ayton Tourist Information Centre has once more signed up to take part in the pounds 50,000 Wish campaign.

And its staff are now hoping people will start collecting tokens on their behalf so they can keep the independent resource going.

Hambleton Council gave up the service five years ago - so a management committee made up of local residents was formed to run the facility. Since then, they have been responsible for raising funds and every year hold an array of money-raising events to keep it going.

Committee secretary Margaret Friend said: "The money will go towards our utility bills, as it always does.

"When the council closed all of their tourist centres down, a group of us then decided to do what we could to keep it going."

The centre, in the village's High Green car park, is open from April to October and has 25 hard-working volunteers. …
