United's Success Is a Boost to Ferry Trade

NEWCASTLE United's early premier league successes have seen a huge boost in the number of foreign visitors to Tyneside.

Ferry operator DFDS Seaways has said the number of Dutch and German passengers using its Newcastle to Amsterdam cruise ferry route has increased as fans head to St James' Park.

Compared to last season, DFDS Seaways has so far seen a 16% increase in the number of Europeans using the route to attend football games. With the club's strong position in the table DFDS Seaways says it expects this figure to increase by more than 30% by the close of 2011/12 season.

John Crummie, passenger director for DFDS Seaways North Sea routes says: "Newcastle and Sunderland games are extremely popular for Dutch and German visitors. Last season more than 6,000 used the route to attend football games in the North East and we expect this figure to have almost doubled by the close of the current season.

"These results highlight the Newcastle-Amsterdam route as a convenient and affordable connection between the North East and northern Europe. …
