A HIGHLY-RESPECTED former councillor and magistrate has passed away at the age of 80.

Doreen Bland, previously Doreen Warner, of Longbenton in North Tyneside, died peacefully on Thursday, December 8. The mother-of-two was born into the Wood family, to Tommy and Elizabeth, in Scotswood, something her son Paul said she was "immensely proud of".

She spent time working at The Gladstone Hotel on Scotswood Road, were her mother was the landlord. She then moved to work at The Printer's Pie in Pudding Chare. Doreen also worked as a store detective for Cooperative stores and Woolworths. She became a councillor for Longbenton and served her area for around 30 years in that capacity.

She also served as Mayor of North Tyneside from May 1982 to April 1983.

Doreen married her first husband Chris Warner and they had two children, Paul and Carole.

Her son Paul said: "She was very passionate about the area, the people and the strength and work ethic of working class people in the North East. …
