A TEENAGER who dazzled the pilot of a police helicopter with a light from his bedroom has apologised in court.

The 16-year-old flashed a lamp through a window at his Guisborough home.

Yesterday at Teesside Youth Court, he apologised for his actions and said he had been "daft". Asked how he felt about it now, he replied: "Sorry for doing it".

His mum, who accompanied him to court, called him "a daft lad" and said her son hadn't appreciated the seriousness of his act. "He does not see it as we see it," she added.

The boy, who can't be named because of his age, was yesterday due to spend time at Durham Tees Valley Airport, where the Cleveland Police helicopter unit is based. He was meeting the pilot he had shone the light at and being educated on the seriousness of his act.

Prosecutor Kate Hills had told the court that a "very bright light" had been shone at the helicopter on the evening of August 3. The boy was located through his bedroom window by the pilot and soon arrested by police on foot. …
