Be Big Enough to Kill Charges, Says Portas

RETAIL guru Mary Portas today urged Westminster council chiefs to be "big enough" to kill off planned new evening and weekend parking charges for good.

She made the appeal after the town hall abandoned the proposed new parking regime for at least nine months.

"All the Londoners I've spoken to are clear they don't want this," she told the Standard.

"I'm glad someone's seen sense and is starting to listen to them. We all make mistakes, but it's being big enough to back down that counts more."

Just days ago, Ms Portas unleashed one of the most ferocious attacks on the new West End parking levies of up to [pounds sterling]4.80-an-hour which were due to come into force in early January.

In a governmentcommissioned report on saving the high street, she condemned the charges as "sheer madness".

Londoners were last night toasting Westminster's decision to back down with celebrations across the West End. …
