THANK goodness your exposure of Westminster's crazy Sunday and evening parking charges, uniting sensible Londoners of all political creeds against the plan, has produced a reprieve. Westminster residents such as myself, let alone businesses, were not consulted and were told to shut up when we protested. Friends of mine in the local Conservative Association were bullied with the warning that their ward committee meetings would be supervised by the local party chair as they had spoken against the charges.

There are many preferable alternative approaches that could have been taken, including staff parking permits for businesses giving free off-peak street parking and rephasing traffic lights to ease congestion.

I think council leader Colin Barrow has lost all credibility. One hopes that the hierarchy will shift him elsewhere. Westminster resident CLLR Barrow would have led a zealous Westminster cavalry into the Valley of West End Death despite sustained bombardment from all quarters -- including his party colleagues in the Mayor's office and in government. I feel a bit sorry for him. …
