A RECOMMENDATION to approve a permanent music festival site at Yelgun near Byron Bay is a blow to the work of conservationists who have been working to protect this very fragile area for years, according to Greens MP and environment spokesperson Cate Faehrmann.

Ms Faehrmann said the recommendation was made by the Department of Planning to the Planning Assessment Commission.

She said promoters of the popular Splendour in the Grass festival had been pushing to create a permanent site at Yelgun for several years.

aHowever, there are serious environmental concerns and unanimous opposition from all Byron Shire conservation groups,a she said.

aThe decision threatens the future of the Marshalls Ridge wildlife corridor that links the World Heritage area of the Mount Warning caldera to the Billinudgel Nature Reserve that is adjacent to the site, as well as other coastal reserves such as the Wooyung, Marshalls Creeks and Brunswick Heads nature reserves. …
