Let's Recapture Joy and Peace for Christmas

DO you remember what Christmas was like when you were a child?

December felt like forever and on Christmas Eve you tried so hard to stay awake to see Santa Claus.

The prelude to Christmas seems to be getting longer and longer each year and there are times when Christmas turns from being cheery to a big headache.

The pressure of budgets and over-crowded shopping centres can be a festive mood buster.

Christmas is supposed to be about joy, peace and love but at times it is hard to remember that.

Let's get out there and recapture some of that true Christmas spirit.

Help someone else this Christmas:

Visit one of the many gift trees around town and pick a name or two for those less fortunate and turn yourself into Santa for an hour or two and fill the wishes or donate to a charity.


Wish people that you meet in stores and other casual environments a happy holiday. Say it with a smile.

Adjust your attitude:

There is a lot of pressure to be cheery at Christmas time, but for many Christmas can be quite sad. People are away from their loved ones. And with one in three marriages ending in divorce there are often split Christmas days.

For many Christmas can trigger memories of people who have passed and are not there to share it with them.

If you just don't feel the holiday spirit, try a new approach.

Think of Christmas as a smorgasbord of choices. There are so many things to do: listen to holiday CDs, ring a loved one, talk to your neighbours, put up a tree, bake cookies, put up window lights and send Christmas cards.

The idea is to pick and choose what would make you feel good this season and to the extent possible, do only those things.

Try and see the day through your children's eyes, and remember how you felt as a little person. …
