IT is good to round off the year with a dose of positivity and the latest GVA statistics and the North East Chamber of Commerce's Workforce Survey provided just that.

The signs are clear that businesses in the North East are beginning to pick up the slack following the Government's austerity cutbacks.

The annual regional GVA estimates for 2010 demonstrate an excellent performance by North East businesses in 2010 with our exporting manufacturers leading the way, according to our data.

They show the North East workplace-based GVA in 2010 was pounds 41bn. This is an increase of 3.8% on 2009 compared to UK and England increases of 3.2%.

The statistics contradict the assumption that the North East has performed worse since the recession than other regions, with our broad business base playing a key role in our performance.

The numbers illustrate the North East's capacity for further development and with fresh investment in specific areas of the region's infrastructure we could be doing so much more for UK plc. …
