HARVESTING issues caused by the wet weather along with the strong Australian dollar impacted on the timber industry in 2011, according to Andrew Hurford of Hurford Hardwood.

Mr Hurford's family-owned company owns 2000 hectares of forested land.

a(The wet weather) has probably got a number of mills behind in their supply schedule,a Mr Hurford said.

aIt is a challenge to keep the supply where you would like to have it, but I think most have come through it.

aBut I don't think we have seen the end of the wet weather, so hopefully there will be just enough dry weather between the showers to keep everyone going,a he said.

Mr Hurford said a downturn in the building industry slowed demand for timber, but he said there was a great future for the sector with timber products still keenly sought.

A federal parliamentary inquiry into forestry released its report and recommendations in November.

aThe report that came out of that was generally positive and identified work that needs to be done on a national strategy for ongoing plantations and getting more timber in the ground in Australia,a Mr Hurford said. …
