AFTER a two-year break, Santa will be back today starting the last race at Ipswich racetrack before Christmas Day.

Long-time starter Ron Corvi donned the red and white outfit for that race each year for about a decade until he retired after his 70th birthday.

Now 72, Ron is passing on the Christmas racing tradition to Grant Greasley, who will send the field on its way in the last race today.

Ron Corvi said the idea of dressing up as Santa came to him after hearing kids at the pre-Christmas meeting asking where Santa was. aI put it to the committee and they thought it was a good idea but the first question was if the stewards would mind,a Mr Corvi said yesterday.

aBut they said they had no problems with it.

aThe only issue was one time a horse wouldn't go into the barrier so I gave it a bit of a touch-up with the whip and John Hackett the chief steward called up and said: a[approximately]You might like to get someone else to do that; it's not a good look to have Santa whipping a horse'. …
