HEAD coach Alan Tait was left to lament a sluggish start as his Newcastle Falcons side slumped to a 27-19 Aviva Premiership defeat at Sale Sharks.

Having decided to travel on the day rather than take his players away from their families for a Christmas hotel stay, the Scot insisted: "We cannot use that as an excuse.

"The decision to travel on match-day was made more than a month ago, so the lads have known for a while what we were doing."

Taking their time to get the journey out of their legs as they trailed 19-3 on the halfhour before a rousing comeback, Tait added: "It was 30 minutes until we woke up and got ourselves into the play.

"The most disappointing aspect for me was the fact the players did not seem to have prepared themselves mentally for the challenge."

Crediting a combative home side but hammering his troops for their apparent lack of early desire, the head coach added: "Full marks to Sale - they do not have a load of big stars but they work hard for one another. …
