Depleted Eagles Finish with a Defeat; BASKETBALL

NEWCASTLE Eagles were beaten but not bowed as they lost their return fixture 80-70 against the Nigerian National Team at the Basketball Days Tournament in Holland.

The result meant the Eagles finished fourth on their debut trip to Europe and first foray into international basketball.

The final result does not show the effort Newcastle's players put into the game and the tournament as a whole.

At times the line-ups they had to put out were unfamiliar as they had to overcome injuries to Joe Chapman and Fab Flournoy.

Then at half-time, when they were only down by down at 39-36, they lost Paul Gause to a tight hamstring and their tournament was done.

They still battled manfully to the final buzzer but the Nigerians' deeper roster and fresher legs held sway on the night.

Head coach Flournoy, despite not liking the taste of defeat, was still upbeat after the game.

He said: "I had mixed feelings going into the game with it being our fourth match in as many days. …
