POLICE have arrested a man over the hit-and-run death of a 60-year-old Ocean Shores man at Mullumbimby on Tuesday.

Popular local John Foss died from serious head injuries after been struck by a white van at the junction of Synotts Rd and Coolamon Scenic Dr about 10am.

A man was arrested yesterday morning at a residence near Clunes and taken to Byron Bay Police Station for questioning.

Tweed-Byron Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Greg Jago said the arrested man was still assisting police with their inquiries yesterday afternoon but no charges had been laid at that stage.

He would not be drawn on whether or not charges were expected to be laid.

Mr Foss, an Irishman who was well known for his motorised-bike business, Fosscati Motorised Bicycles, and well loved for his sense of humour, was returning from a rescue at Brunswick Heads on Tuesday morning where he was an active volunteer with Marine Rescue NSW.

He had just helped save four people whose rigid inflatable boat had capsized while attempting to cross the Brunswick River bar about 7. …
