European Parliament to Visit City; Members of U.S. House, Europeans Meet for Talks on Politics, Economics

Financial markets, trade and government debt are expected to be part of the discussion this weekend when members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the European Parliament meet in Jacksonville.

The Transatlantic Legislators' Dialogue is a twice-a-year exchange between members of the two legislatures, where they talk about international political and business issues.

The last meeting was in Budapest. But U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns, who chairs the American delegation, said he picked Jacksonville - which hasn't been part of the meetings before - because he wanted the Euopeans to see the city's port.

"I wanted to brag on it. I wanted the people from Europe to see it," said Stearns, R-Fla., adding the port plays into some issues on the meeting agenda. House members have been promoting better security for commercial shipping, and Stearns said he wanted the delegation to see the port's size and its operation.

The delegations - 17 European politicians and eight House members, including Reps. Corrine Brown and Ander Crenshaw - will visit the Jacksonville Port Authority's Blount Island facilities. …
