2011 FINISHED on a high note during the crazy Xmas/Boxing Day TC Fini swell with some of the best and biggest waves seen during the holiday break since the sixties and seventies.

We're now into the new surfing year of 2012 and it's an equally massive one for the Gold and Tweed coasts, starting this weekend with the blast from the past Burleigh Boardriders single fin event.

It's the 15th year of this annual event for single fin surfboards made prior to 1982.

Burleigh Headland is one of the best surfing amphitheatres on the planet and will resemble a mobile museum of the golden age seventies boards where the spirit of the competition is more about fun than rankings or prizemoney and commemorating surfing friends who have passed on.

Clint Kimmins is defending champion while last year's runner-up, Burleigh boardrider, Noah Lane, is the local wildcard for the Breaka Pro at Burleigh on February 7-11.

Both Lane and Kimmins will be in the Quiksilver trials at Snapper on Friday, February 24.

The Gold Coast championships of the Jim Beam Surf Tag Australian Series will be on January 14 at D-Bah.

The National Series is the largest team surfing competition with 80 clubs going for the No 1 team title to be decided at Ballina on February 22-23.

The Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing Day, now in its 22nd year, is on again on January 21-22.

It's a national program that will come to a beach near you. To register check out www.girlsgosurfingday.com.

BILLABONG has moved its World Professional Junior Championships from North Narrabeen, Sydney to Burleigh Point on the Australia Day week (January 20-29) for the junior men's and women's.

Kirra's Jack Freestone will be defending his World Junior title.

Expect to hear expert commentary from former world champion, Mark Occhilupo and world number two, Luke Egan, on the live webcast and check out the future of pro surfing from an awesome international field. …
