THE men and women of the SES don't see themselves as heroes but surely they qualify to be given that accolade by any measure.

Consider the sacrifice of SES volunteer Beth Suhr during the floods last year. Ipswich SES chief Arie van den Ende was in awe of the way she put community first.

aMy offsider Beth got evacuated and had to move into the depot with her two dogs, three cats and two grandkids,a Mr van den Ende said.

aShe lived here for three or four days She kept doing her rescue work and the kids helped with filling sandbags and doing other little jobs.a

The work of the SES was all embracing. Was there anything they didn't do?

aWe searched from the mouth of the Brisbane River to Lockyer Creek for debris, livestock or missing persons,a he said.

aIn Goodna we did the best we could with evacuations but our main role was to warn people to get out of their houses. …
