DESPITE all they've been through in the past year, the close-knit Brown family can still raise a smile.

Their North Booval home was inundated to the roof in the January 2011 floods, their insurance company knocked back their claim soon after and breadwinner Kevin lost his job when Australian Hardboards closed down.

On his birthday last January 11, Mr Brown was anxiously watching the water rise in the Bundamba Creek and Bremer River.

His wife Julie said the family left their Helen St home that day about 5pm.
