THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD 9PM, BBC2 The thing about Charles Dickens's novel Edwin Drood, as every schoolchild knows, is that its author died before he could finish it, so we can't be sure how the opium-permeated murder mystery, set in the lightly fictionalised Medway town of Rochester, was meant to end. Not that this deterred Gwyneth Hughes from confecting an atmospheric two-part adaptation. Freddie Fox stars as Drood, while Matthew Rhys is his uncle, John Jasper.
