Home Life Values a Recipe for a Close Family; Fallon Hudson Discovers Mackay's Domestic Goddesses

Article excerpt

THE smell of cake batter drifts from Kasey Pertsch's kitchen.

She and her sister-in-law, Jen Pertsch, have a fresh batch of chocolate cupcakes that look like vanilla sundaes, sitting next to a retro-inspired pink Kenwood Mixmaster.

While whizzing around the kitchen, the pair look likes the ultimate domestic goddesses, with their piping bags and pearls.

Kasey and Jen belong to a new breed of women who have left their 9-to-5 jobs and taken the risk to operate a business to suit their lifestyles.

Along with the change of career, both women are raising young families and prove that females can be savvy, independent women who, like their grandmothers and mothers before them, know the importance of domestic life.

It seems women have taken a step back in time, where there is still the possibility of having your cake and eating it too.

Say goodbye to the corporateobsessed career woman; the life of the domestic goddess is on the rise.

A year ago Kasey and Jen used to bake cakes and sweets for friends and family until they thought they could run a household and a business from their home.

aWith a young family, this line of work benefits us hugely,a Kasey said.

aWhat I love about what I do is I can start making a cake, and then I can build a few blocks with Flynn and then quickly check the cake in the oven.

aIt is an interactive type of job as well. It is not like once you start you have to be continuously there hovering over the cake. You can step away and put a load of washing on if you need to.

aI work my working day around Flynn's sleep times a it is all about multi-tasking.a

Jen agreed, saying some days they might be cooking for 12 hours.

aIt is great, the kids can hang out with us, we can then stop and give them some dinner and keep going,a Jen said.

aWe are lucky; we set them up with craft activities, that way we know they will be entertained.

aYou couldn't do what we do and go and work for somebody else, because you have daycare and other things to consider a this way we can do something we enjoy,a Jen said.

Kasey and Jen believe you don't need lessons to be a domestic goddess. They believe all women have the ability to be mothers and wives and still be confident of retaining their individuality. …
