Jewel Has a Chance to Glisten Again

CROWNING Jewel has been unearthed a fine opportunity at Kelso in which to set the record straight.

Keith Reveley's six-yearold was turned over as an odds-on chance at Catterick last month, but redemption should be forthcoming in the EBF "National Hunt" Novices' Hurdle.

Crowning Jewel did not do a great deal wrong in North Yorkshire, though jockey James Reveley may have wished he was a little closer to the speed as his partner looked a shade flat-footed approaching the straight.

Reveley's inmate finished third behind Bourne and Into Wain, but picked up encouragingly late on.

With that in mind, it is perhaps not the biggest shock in the world to see Crowning Jewel step up two miles, six and a half furlongs here.

And while Bourne failed to advertise the form at Musselburgh on New Year's Day, it was reassuring to see Into Wain, who runs earlier on the card, win with a little authority at Kelso a couple of weeks ago.

Before that, Crowning Jewel finished second on his hurdling debut at Newcastle, when Malt Master proved a length and a half too strong. …
