Article excerpt

BOB Catterall is a quietly-spoken gentleman with a soft Canadian accent and during his amazing life he has visited 35 countries.

However, he always comes home to Mackay because this is his piece of paradise.

Bob was born and raised in Saskatoon in central Canada and in 1958 at the age of about 26 he went on a holiday to New Zealand, met an Australian woman named Norma and he fell in love with her.

C[pounds sterling]We came back to her home town of Coffs Harbour, got married, and then we went to England for three years,C[yen] Bob said.

C[pounds sterling]We lived in Manchester and I got a job as a technician with the Chubb safe company.

C[pounds sterling]Then we came to Sydney and I got a job at the Chubb factory. I was a Cyfinal fitter' putting locks on safes and doors.

C[pounds sterling]Then we moved from Sydney to Brisbane and I got a job as a travelling technician.C[yen]

The story of how Bob came to Mackay is a bit unusual. He was headhunted by Mackay Office Equipment to come here to work. He sold office machinery in Mackay from about 1985 for about four years.

He bought the machinery side of the business off Bill McKinstry and ran it before his son took it over.

Every morning Bob still goes into the office, now known as Mackay Business Machines in Gregory St, and even though he is 79 he still does the mail and a few other chores.

C[pounds sterling]I'm the Cygofer' and I go for this and I go for that,C[yen] Bob said.

C[pounds sterling]It keeps me fit and out from under my wife's feet.C[yen]

Almost every morning you'll see Bob making the regular trip to and from the Post Office in Sydney St for his office.

Of his four adult children, Robert now owns Mackay Business Machines, another son is in Brisbane and two daughters are in Perth and on the Gold Coast.

Bob doesn't miss Canada. …
