Black Spot Upgrade Plans Moving Along

A $70 MILLION upgrade to the Blacksoil interchange is a step closer with the tender process kicking off today.

More than 40,000 vehicles a day travel between the Blacksoil interchange, on the Warrego and Brisbane Valley Hwys, and the Ipswich Mwy each day, a notorious black spot area for crashes and road deaths.

Premier Anna Bligh made the announcement on Saturday and said the upgrade would improve safety and ease congestion by separating the intersection with one highway overpassing the other.

C[pounds sterling]This will be a welcome upgrade for the thousands of motorists who drive along both highways every day,C[yen] Ms Bligh said.

C[pounds sterling]By starting the tender process next week, we're one step closer to construction.C[yen]

Ms Bligh said work on the intersection at the Brisbane Valley Hwy and Warrego Hwy intersection was slated to start mid-year and be finished by 2014.

Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said the importance of the project for the west of Ipswich was the equivalent of the Ipswich Mwy upgrade.

C[pounds sterling]It is vital for the economic development of the western corridor and it is crucial for commuters on the Warrego and Brisbane Valley highways,C[yen] Mr Neumann said.

Member for Ipswich West Wayne Wendt said an overpass would greatly improve safety at the busy intersection.

C[pounds sterling]This will remove the need for vehicles to turn across oncoming traffic in negotiating the intersection as is currently the case,C[yen] Mr Wendt said.

Somerset Regional Council mayor Graeme Lehmann said the upgrade was good news for Somerset residents.

C[pounds sterling]The interchange will greatly improve safety at a known black spot and it's one of the major routes into our region so I'm very pleased the project is moving ahead,C[yen] Cr Lehmann said. …
