ON Australia Day we come together to celebrate what's great about Australia and being an Aussie.

It's a day to reflect on what we can be proud of in our great nation. It's a day for us to re-commit to making Australia an even better place for the future.

January 26 is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships from Great Britain and the raising of the Union Jack at Sydney Cove by its commander Captain Arthur Phillip, in 1788.

On Australia Day, more than half of the nation's population of 21 million attend either an organised community event or get together with family and friends with the intention of celebrating our national day. Others spend the holiday relaxing with family and friends.

Yet Australia Day is more then barbecues and fireworks and more then just another public holiday.

Southern Downs residents are urged to show their Aussie spirit and join in local community celebrations on Thursday.

Mayor Ron Bellingham is encouraging residents to rally neighbours and friends along to local celebrations in Warwick, Stanthorpe and Killarney to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and activities typified by life in Australia.

Warwick celebrations will again be held in Victoria Park, across from the Warwick Hospital.

Event organiser Tracy Vellacott said a positive from last year's disastrous flooding in the Queens Park precinct was the discovery of just how well the Australia Day celebrations sat within the relaxed Victoria Park environment.

aIt's wonderful to be able to run this event in a park that doesn't see too much action,a she said.

aWe have a fantastic afternoon of musical entertainment planned and, of course, the celebrations will be capped off by a brilliant fireworks display by council pyrotechnician Brian Weeks.a

Victoria Park celebrations get underway from 4pm, where Lions and Rotary club members will have the barbecue and chip cookers fired up.

The audience will enjoy entertainment from local performers and a free jumping castle, face painting and an animal nursery will keep the kids smiling. …
