Hit-and-Run Victim May Have Been Targeted

A MOTORIST mounted the kerb and drove into a pedestrian in what police believe may have been a deliberate hit-and-run assault.

An Audi A3 with blacked-out windows careered from the road and slammed into the 21-year-old victim as he walked home from a night out in Washington.

Paramedics raced to the scene after he was thrown into the air and suffered head injuries after crashing on to the ground.

Detectives confirmed they believed the pedestrian was intentionally targeted in the early hours of yesterday.

Officers threw up a cordon around the scene of the crash and blood still stained the road where the man was struck.

And they said the victim was lucky to be alive following the incident.

Det Sgt Dave Wakefield, of Northumbria Police's major crime unit, said: "We believe this car intentionally struck this young man and caused his injuries deliberately. "This could very easily have been a fatal collision and we urgently need to trace the driver of the car. …
