CATTLEMAN Brian McGahan took a stand in the gusty wind and light drizzle on the catwalk above Warwick sale on Tuesday.

It might have been mid-January but coats and vests gave the second cattle sale of 2012 a distinctly wintry feel.

Dorothy and Les Kable were among those who opted to rug up as 30kmh south-easterly winds kept the maximum temperature well below the seasonal average of 30 degrees.

C[pounds sterling]It is crazy weather isn't it? This time last week we were sweltering,C[yen] Mrs Kable said.

The cool change was in stark contrast to the weather during the first cattle sale of the year, seven days earlier, when a hot northerly took the temperature to a sultry 35 degrees.

What's more, Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke warns there are more erratic days ahead with cool temperatures forecast this week, ahead of a slightly warmer change and the increased chance of showers and thunderstorms.

C[pounds sterling]This weather pattern is fairly consistent with the La Nina phase,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]We will continue to see easterly winds, which bring cooler, moist air to our region.

C[pounds sterling]I would also expect a possible rainy day tomorrow or Thursday with below average day-time temperatures.C[yen]

Landholders looking anxiously at empty rain gauges may be reassured by Mr Dutschke's forecast for more wet days across the Southern Downs in the last week of January.

C[pounds sterling]I think there are signs we should get close to our average rainfall for the summer,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]However, as we reach February and early autumn, the La Nina influence subsides and there is a reduced chance of average rainfalls across the region. …
