IN greyhound racing the box draw is crucial and the draw for the Carters Canine Capers Blue Paws Final at the Grafton Greyhound Race meeting today has thrown up more questions than it has answered.

The two fastest greyhounds in the race over the 480m journey are the Andrew Monaghan-trained Captive, which recorded a quick 27.39-second heat victory, and the John Free-trained Premier Demand, which although beaten in his heat clocked an equally impressive 27.38 seconds just one week prior.

While Captive or Premier Demand are expected to win the race, the box draw has made it difficult for form analysts.

Captive has apparently drawn nicely in box two however should Nasty Kantasta, which has drawn box one, step cleanly, she has a trait of moving to the right on box rise which could spell danger in the early part for Captive should he be a little tardy out of the boxes.

Premier Demand has seemingly drawn reasonably out in box six with the slow-starting Everlong drawn inside him. The negative is that the greyhound drawn on his outside, Loud Proud Cloud, last week jumped beautifully from his rails draw and he has a trait of moving to the rails in the early stages.

The only greyhound which appears to have drawn quite well on paper is the Malcolm Ross-trained Stafford Swagman who will start from box eight.

Stafford Swagman showed good speed from box three in the qualifying heat and appeared to appreciate a bit of room to move so the wider draw should not pose any problems.

In the heat Stafford Swagman was beaten just under two lengths in 27.59 seconds and although he will be no match for either Captive or Premier Demand should they receive clear runs, he may represent each-way value at double figure odds for punters looking for a roughie.

The two equal first section record holders for the 407m journey will be racing on the program today, albeit in different races. …
