Forget Fantasy Buys and There Could Be Some Value in the Sales

THE January transfer window has been exceptionally quiet and it may in part be explained by clubs struggling to identify targets who can make an immediate impact.

Mid-season signings tend to be afforded little leeway at their new club -- with around 20 games to play, managers must be convinced of a player's ability to integrate immediately.

Chelsea have signed such a player in Gary Cahill but their search for a right-back has so far proved fruitless, as has Arsenal's efforts to find cover in the full-back position.

Last week, this column mentioned the EA Sports Player Performance Index, the official player ranking system of the Premier League, in discussing Emmanuel Adebayor's effectiveness for Tottenham.

While a player's rating is influenced by the success of his team-mates, it throws up some feasible targets for London clubs, starting with Chelsea and Arsenal in that full-back search.

The top three full-backs this season are Patrice Evra, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Ashley Cole. …
