Refuge on a Roof as Clean-Up Starts

TWO people were rescued late yesterday morning off the roof of their Stotts Creek home by SES staff who managed to reach them from the Murwillumbah side of the affected flood area.

The pair was transported by SES vehicles to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital for a health check.

The rescue effort also involved police, Rural Fire Service and voluntary rescue staff.

In a happier evacuation process, residents from Fingal, Condong, Tumbulgum and Chinderah, who had sought overnight shelter at the Kingscliff Evacuation Centre, were permitted to return to their homes yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, the clean-up in and around Murwillumbah proceeded at a hectic pace.

The Byangum Bridge which had stockpiled a huge variety of debris on the back of the floodwaters which swept over it throughout most of Wednesday has been reopened to traffic.

Workers laboured at a hectic pace throughout yesterday morning, using both elbow grease and machine to clean away the debris which included varying sizes of branches and logs. …
