JUST weeks into Olympic year, a number of the region's middle distance hopefuls are already flexing their muscles.

Nick McCormick and Ricky Stevenson, who could well be vying for a 1,500 metres place, competed at the weekend in America and Australia respectively while Jonny Taylor, who has a steeplechase spot as his target, continued his endurance base with an outing over the country in Spain.

McCormick, whose previous outing before heading Down Under was in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km in November where he finished in second place behind Taylor, took in the Hunter Track Classic and finished a close up third in the 1,500 metres recording 3min 40.80secs.

With the B qualifying time for the Games set at 3:38 then, if that is the event the Morpeth athlete is targeting then over the coming weeks and months his opening salvo will surely be comfortably erased.

While McCormick was enjoying the Australian weather Stevenson (New Marske) took to the boards in the New Balance Games in New York where, over a mile, finished in fourth place in 3:58. …
