GYMPIE TAFE college has launched a new course aimed at opening at least one of the doors to success in the booming mining and resources sector of the economy.

For those who find themselves beginning at the beginning, the course aims to open the ground floor entrance to what could end up being an exciting and lucrative career.

Teacher Nigel Terrell said there were plenty of opportunities in the resources sector but they were not automatically available to people who were completely new to the field.

To be competitive in the job market, applicants needed to at least know their tools and how to use them.

TAFE's Resources 101 course aimed to bridge that basic skills gap, Mr Terrell said yesterday.
