Goomeri School to Celebrate 100 Years of Education in March

THE start of a new school year is always exciting and busy but for the Goomeri State School P-10 school community, 2012 is extra special as they prepare for the school centenary celebrations on Saturday, March 3.

Goomeri Provision School opened on February 5, 1912, with 21 children enrolling. It became a state school in 1913 and the secondary department opened in 1964.

Now in 2012, about 140 students from Prep to Year 10 and 30 staff attend the school.

The centenary celebrations will be in the form of a school fete, commencing at 9am, with a variety of stalls, classroom displays and demonstrations as well as class reunions.

Entertainment will include performances by students, the school choir, whipcracking, the school equestrian team, music, food, Dreamtime Reptiles, children's rides, games from yesteryear and much, much more.

The school's honey house was once the Ban Ban Springs State School and an outbuilding on aMargooa property before being moved to Goomeri State School where it became the bee-keeping club and then a horticultural club. …
