A FORMER drug addict has won his freedom after showing a Teesside judge he could turn his life around.

The success story of 27-year-old Daniel Smith was heard at Teesside Crown Court yesterday.

Eight months ago he appeared for sentencing for a list of drug offences.

The court was told then how his addiction to mephedrone, also known as MCAT and meow meow, spiralled out of control and led to him selling drugs to fund it.

He was caught with drugs twice, on Highfield Road and Grisedale Crescent in Grangetown, in two separate arrests in August 2010.

He had 181 diazepam tablets, small amounts of cocaine, cannabis and the Class B drug naphyrone, pounds 180 cash and a "dealer's list".

Smith, of Broadhaven Close, Grangetown, admitted supplying, possessing with intent to supply and possessing Class B and C drugs, and possessing a Class A drug.

Judge Howard Crowson said Smith could have been jailed for the seven offences but, following negative drugs tests, gave him a chance. …
