THE waiting time for drug addicts hoping to join a methadone program on the Sunshine Coast was too long, a doctor said yesterday.

Dr Wayne Herdy, a Nambour general practitioner with an interest in community-based drug rehabilitation, said he understood delay in joining the methadone program to be six to eight weeks.

A drug user told a Sunshine Coast court this week that he wanted to access the methadone program run by Queensland Health's Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Service but the waiting list was too long.

Dr Herdy said drug users needed to be able to access a methadone program when they were ready.

aIt's a longer wait list than is desirable because people who want to access a drug treatment program are by nature people who are impulsive,a he said.

aGenerally, they are in very difficult personal circumstances and often that have legal problems, financial problems or personal problems.a

Queensland Health did not directly answer the Daily's questions about the waiting time for the methadone program at Nambour. …
