Why It's Not Curtains for North East Theatres

THEATRES in the region are bucking a national trend and enticing audiences to buy tickets to more shows.

Figures released by the Arts Council revealed a decline in sales nationally.

But popular venues in the North East say they are weathering the credit crisis well and believe theatre trips are still an important part of our social calendar.

Erica Whyman, chief executive of Northern Stage, said the Newcastle venue has created a new way to entice people into the venue.

The theatre now runs a multi-buy scheme in which theatre-goers can benefit from massive discounts by buying tickets for more than one show at a time.

"It's nervous times but ticket sales have held up well," she said.

"When people are saving money the first thing to go is having an expensive holiday, or buying a new family car, but actually something the following week, like going to the theatre, is still happening."

The Customs House in South Shields, said funding cuts have hit them but they are still holding up well. …
