Fishing Compo Talks Beached; Negotiators Flounder over Final Figure for Fishing Industry: Gardner

MORE than seven months of tense negotiations over what compensation Gladstone fishermen should get for the possible loss of fishing grounds in the area due to port development has drawn to a close.

But Gladstone Seafood Industry Association's Michael Gardner, who sat on the compensation committee, said that despite several models being brought to the table, no agreement was found.

The compensation committee includes the ports corporation, state government representatives and Mr Gardner.

It was created under a condition of the environmental impact statement (EIS) for a dredging project at the port and was meant to come to an agreement about a model for compensation, and a final figure.

Mr Gardner said that although the port had brought several offers to the table, none were adequate for the fishing industry.

He said he was concerned that not enough analysis of the economic and social effects of numerous developments at the port was done before approvals were made. …
